It is a sport that was invented at the end of the 19th century, a sport that has seen legendary figures and fame, and a sport that has given many
people the opportunity of a lifetime as players, as is the case with many sports. The following paper examines the history of basketball. The History of Basketball
"James Naismith was the Canadian physical education instructor who invented basketball in 1891" (Bellis, 2007). Naismith was born in Canada but later moved to
the United States where he was the physical education teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts at Springfield College (Bellis, 2007). Springfield College was the Y.M.C.A. training school at the time that Naismith
worked there and "under the direction of American phys-ed specialist Luther Halsey Gulick" he "invented the indoor sport of basketball" (Bellis, 2007). Apparently he was given only 14 days to
come up with some sort of indoor game that some rowdy class members could play throughout the rough winters of New England (Bellis, 2007). In addition, when faced with this
challenge, he "wanted to create a game of skill for the students instead of one that relied solely on strength" (Kansas Heritage, 2007).
It was in 1892 that the rules were first developed (Bellis, 2007). At first the ball that was used was a soccer ball and it was essentially dribbled "up
and down a court of unspecified dimensions. Points were earned by landing the ball in a peach basket" (Bellis, 2007). It would only be one year later that an iron
hoop with a basket, like a hammock, was created (Bellis, 2007). An opened net, through which the ball could pass, was not created for another 10 years (Bellis, 2007). As
