Immigrants have shaped this nation in many important ways. All too often, however, mainstream American tends to look at immigrants as
being inferior to themselves. They also tend to not distinguish between the various immigrant populations that make up this country. We have this same tendency in California, in
fact. The thesis can be presented that mainstream America, as it is personified by mainstream California, sees the collective face of immigration rather than the personal face of immigration.
Immigrants are typically lumped into broad categories like Hispanic, Asian, and European. In fact each of these categories encapsulated many distinct subcategories. Because we regard these categories
collectively, however, the tendency is to overlook their varied personalities. The result can be prejudice, discrimination, and even hostility. To illustrate the
contentions presented above, consider for example the Asian immigrants that now form such a vital component of our state. Asians are almost as different from themselves as they are
mainstream America when we look at the specific cultures. Korean Americans, Chinese Americans, and Fillipino Americans have sought solace in our state for much of our history. A
more recent arrival, however, are the Vietnamese Americans. When our country withdrew from the Vietnam, many Vietnamese followed us home. They joined other Vietnamese, in fact, who had
