Mankinds use of coal extends back
to ancient times. Its glossy black surface was first used in the creation of various art forms. Because it carved easily and retained a beautiful shine it was
incorporated into everything from jewelry to architectural decoration by cultures as diverse and the Romans and the Chinese. In the fourteenth century, however, coal began to occupy another role
in ancient civilization. When the Romans that had invaded Britain found that one of its properties was its ready combustibility they quickly turned to it as their primary fuel
source. With the Industrial Revolution coal was transported from home use to industrial use. Because of it, in fact, we have inventions like the steam engine that was
employed not only in the manufacture of goods but also their transport. When coal was subsequently discovered in the American colonies the whole process started all over again as
coal moved from a primary use of home heating to the industrial use that now characterizes it. Not all of the impacts of coal, however, have been positive.
Indeed, the thesis can be presented that coal has impacted human culture in a diversity of adverse ways. These adverse impacts include the negative health impacts of coal and
the many environmental problems that are associated with it. The most recent adverse impacts of coal are found in the United States.
Pittsburg, of course, became the first coal mining community in our nation. As our understanding of the resource progressed, however, coal reserves were found elsewhere as well.
