than 400 million people, with many different variations and dialects. The language is still one that is evolving and changing. The development of Spanish into its current world language
position has been one of many changes. The origins of Spanish may be traced to the Indo-European family of languages where the earliest reconstructible ancestor is thought to have been
spoken about 5,000 years ago near the black sea (Penny, 2002). In more recent time it may be argued that the root of the Spanish dialects is vulgar Latin. This
was a language that was brought to Spain and the Iberian Peninsula in the second to third centuries BCE1, with the first Spanish texts appearing around the year 1150 (Penny,
2002, Hualde et al, 2002). The Romanisation of Spain started in earnest around the Second Punic War in around 218 BCE, the language spread through common use as it
was not enforced. The take up appears to have lead to many areas being bilingual for several generations as Lain was adopted for practical matters, in order to trade and
communicate. This take u was a slow progression and started the influences of modern Spanish. Today Latin is not spoken, but penny (2002) argues that in reality Spanish may be
