universal definition of abnormal. It is a challenge that has yet to be resolved. There is agreement about certain factors that would suggest abnormality. If a person is suffering psychologically;
maladaptive behaviors that interfere with daily life and with general well-being; deviancy from statistical norms such as with IQ; vast variation from societys standards and/or laws; doing something that is
socially uncomfortable to others; unpredictability; and irrationality (Carson, Butcher & Mineka, 2010). Abnormal psychology has been around since the beginning of time and it has evolved from one era
to another. Today, we scoff at many of the ancient beliefs about the causes of abnormal behavior. Abnormal psychology as a discipline has been around for just about 100 years
but the explanations to account for abnormal behavior are found in ancient times. The earliest explanation took an animalistic or spiritual approach (Carson, Butcher & Mineka, 2010). This was
founded on the belief that the metaphysical world could affect the human world (Stoker, 2010). Abnormal people were possessed by demons or sometimes good spirits (Carson, Butcher & Mineka, 2010).
Treatment included drilling holes in peoples heads to release the evil spirits (Stoker, 2010). Other treatments included exorcism, prayer, incantations, magic, and horrible tasting concoctions of herbs and plants (Carson,
Butcher & Mineka, 2010). It is known that this took place as early as 3000 B.C. in Peru and in the Aztec and Incan civilizations (Stoker, 2010). In 460 B.C.,
Hippocrates proposed a biological explanation for abnormal behavior. There was an imbalance in the four fluids: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile (Stoker, 2010). He called them humors. While
