become prominent again. Setzer (1995) reported the first wave of interest in the historical Jesus was in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; the second wave was initiated in
Germany in the 1950s and 1960s; and the third wave is the current one. Borg (1994) suggests this latest wave began sometime in the 1980s. Interestingly enough, many scholars argue
that one can be a good Christian without knowing anything about the historical Jesus (Setzer, 1995). One needs only to have faith, to believe in Him and to try to
live according to the principles and moral codes Christ gave us. Borg (1994) commented that most Christians have a faith image of Christ. They have gained this image through hearing
the Gospels, through sermons, and through reciting creeds. The image is an amalgamation of all they have learned. An historical image of Christ is important because it provides content and
context. Study of the historical Jesus can also help the Christian form a more complete image of Christ. Further, having knowledge of the history of Jesus provides the Christian with
knowledge that can be used when trying to discern between true and false proclamations that are presented as Christian (Borg, 1994). Cain (1999) said that the quest for the
historical Jesus is based on two recognitions. The first is that the Jewish Jesus from Galilee is different than the Jesus who has been interpreted through theology, creeds, liturgy, piety,
creeds and art over two thousand years (Cain, 1999). The other recognition is that the only way to find the Jesus of history is to use the same tools that
