The histiographical debate over just what it was that allowed Native Americans
to not only survive but to thrive in a land where European colonists would at first flounder and many times perish rages on in anthropological, historical, and scientific circles alike.
Although the speculations as to why this was the case vary dramatically, history does support the fact that there was a difference in ability to survive which distinguished the
Native American from the initial European colonists who arrived on this shore. The debate over the question of why this was the case typically centers around the question
of whether the indigenous peoples of the Americas had some innate quality which better equipped them to survive in a land which Europeans regarded both as hostile and barren.
Essentially the histiographical debate on the topic noted above is broken into two opposing camps, those who consider Native American as somehow
better physiologically equipped for survival in the lands which they had inhabited for centuries prior to the arrival of the European interlopers and those who consider the Native American as
having an innate land ethic which allowed them to not only harvest enough from the land to allow them to survive but to be able to do this in such
a manner that the land could go on into perpetuity meeting this function. The purpose of this paper is to explore these two radically different hypotheses and to somehow
come to a better conclusion as to why there was such a dramatic difference in the ability of Native groups to survive in lands which at first proved hazardous to
