one would think of as school or adult education today. There were learning circles and excitement about learning at this school. It is not the traditional school where little desks
lined every room. There was creativity in terms of methodology and the way in which classrooms were set up. Today, teachers are hard pressed to find anything that motivates the
children. They claim that motivation comes from within or expect parents to instill some sort of desire to learn at school. For the Highlander Folk School, there was no need
to come with anything but ones body. The motivation would come with the extraordinary techniques used by Horton and his teachers. But it was more than an alternative school. It
was a social movement designed to help the poor people of Appalachia. In some way, it would touch on race issues which were still not resolved at the time. In
reading this informative book about an important social movement one can see that Myles Horton, along with his wife, were able to create a situation where people in the lower
echelons could be taught new things. These things are related to culture as the recipients of a Highlander education were taught subjects like drama and dance and music. They were
given more than just a cursory education. Rather, they were given an impressive amount of education that many would deem to be extracurricular. Of course, this is a school that
focusses on adult education and at the time that the school was in existence, there were social problems that needed to be considered. It was a time well before the
civil rights movement. The black man was free during the early part of the twentieth century, but in reality, he was not given the same education as the white man.
