form of a movie often follows the most basic of classic storylines. Interestingly, out of the series, it was the first two movies -- "The Godfather" (1972) and "The Godfather,
II" (1974) that are the most indicative of such a process. In them, modern audiences experiences the journey of the hero which parallels many of the epics of ancient times.
The heroes of the great epics are involved with legendary or historical events of broad-based significance that involves great and bold action. Most heros journeys deal with the adventures and
accomplishments of a single individual, which provides for a unified theme throughout the larger story. Most often, the hero is confronting with a number of powers which exist outside the
realm of normal life and cause him to develop certain powers allowing him to undertake a number of unique processes or actions. As a direct result, the hero generally faces
conflict in the form of physical interactions and the dangerous encounters with both seen and unseen enemies who may or may not be human. (In the case of "The Godfather,"
the non-human enemies include law enforcement agencies, the criminal justice system and the amorphous and multi-faced entity that is the Mafia. Furthermore, there are certain commonalties that
run through the storylines of all epic writing. Examples of such include heroism, revenge, love, and passion for a particular pursuit. Certainly, all of these are seen in "The
Godfather." In fact, as the audience follows the heros journey as interpreted by Francis Ford Coppola, it becomes increasingly evident that another important connection to classic heroes journeys is the
fact that "The Godfather" is also about father and son relationships. Who will become supreme in the quest and who will be vanquished? Will power have to be wrenched away
