There are a number of candidates for primary hero of the story, so choosing one if a matter of personal response to the poem. Achilles towers
over the work, but Odysseus is there too, as are Hector, Priam, Paris, Agamemnon and other great warriors. But Odysseus doesnt play the central role here that he does in
The Odyssey, which is named for him and recounts his adventures as he tries to get home to Ithaca after the war. It is difficult to see him as the
principle actor of this poem. Priam is the King of Troy as well as Hectors father, and as such he has a major role to play in the poem. But
again, he seems to be a minor character for two reasons. First, he is an old man at the time the Greeks come to attack his city, which means that
he plays no part in the battlefield action, which is Homers main focus. He is kept on the sidelines mainly by his age, but also by the fact that he
is the king, and his people protect him rather than urging him onto the front lines as they might a younger king. Thus Priam is not a main player, although
he exhibits great courage when he goes to the tent of Achilles, his enemy, to beg for the body of his son. Paris is a stunningly handsome young man but
his good looks dont mitigate the fact that he started the whole mess. First, he judged that Helen, wife of the Spartan king Menelaus, was more beautiful than the goddesses
