Hero....According to Professor Paul Totah of St. Ignatius, Hemingway defined the Code Hero as "a man who lives correctly, following the ideals of honor, courage and endurance in a world
that is sometimes chaotic, often stressful, and always painful" (Anonymous The Code Hero Model: Nick Adams codehero.htm). The Code hero may not be a hero to others, for their focus
is primarily on how they handle themselves in particular situations. "The Code Hero measures himself by how well they handle the difficult situations that life throws at him. In the
end the Code Hero will lose because we are all mortal, but the true measure is how a person faces death" (Anonymous The Code Hero Model: Nick Adams codehero.htm). Bearing
these definitions in mind we present an examination of two of Hemingways works as they involve the Code hero. The works discussed are "The Sun Also Rises" and "A Farewell
to Arms." The two stories are examined separately and then the paper finishes with a discussion of the two. The Sun Also Rises "The Sun Also Rises captures
the terse style of the often laconic Hemingway, yet exhuberates the free spirit of the Lost Generation of the 1920s, of which Hemingway is universally recognized as a charter member...The
story revolves around an American news correspondent, Jake Barnes, who lives and works in Europe, as well as his assorted friends" (Cannon hemingway.html). Jake is very much the Code hero,
though something of a depressing character. Jake has experienced the war and is in a position where he is incapable of physically loving due to injuries. He has been damaged
and yet passionately seeks adventure and life, perhaps seeking an honorable way to die. He and his friends are "looking for some meaning in their lives" (Anonymous Unit Fourteen hamlit14.html).
