about a more recent case where Helene Hegemann, also seventeen, wrote her first book but is charged with plagiarism. While Hegemanns book made it to the top works on a bestseller list, and also had a film credit to her name, a blogger uncovered the fact that material in the novel was taken from another work (Kulish, 2010). The idea that unintentional plagiarism-where ideas are stolen because the author has read the material and stored it in the back of her brain-does not work here. In one instance, a whole page was taken and only a few changes made (Kulish, 2010). Kulish (2010) in fact compares this incident with that of the Viswanathan case, but adds that while the American author was ostracized, no one seems to care about Hegemanns exploits. For example, she is on the short list to receive a prize for the work, and the judges know about the plagiarism charges but do not care (Kulish, 2010). What does Hegemann have to say about the charges? She does not deny that she stole the work. Kulish (2010) relays the following: "Although Ms. Hegemann has apologized for not being more open about her sources, she has also defended herself as the representative of a different generation, one that freely mixes and matches from the whirring flood of information across new and old media, to create something new. " Hegemann is quoted as saying that there is no such thing as originality anyway (Kulish, 2010). Sometimes artists, writers and musicians are at a loss to create something new, but stealing the work of others and interlacing it with ones one words is certainly plagiarism.
