But the Heinz Company makes a lot more than just ketchup and is well known in a lot more places than the United States, where it is based. The company boasts sales of more than $9 billion and is one of the worlds leading distributors of branded foods; their products are distributed to supermarkets as well as to various types of eating establishments ("Heinz and Beech-Nut," 2000). The corporation has fifty companies which operate in about 200 countries, and as their label says, more than 57 hundred varieties are offered (2000). Obviously, Heinz is a lot more than just ketchup. Some of the companys more popular brands are Heinz itself, but also includes StarKist, Ore-Ida, 9-Lives, Weight Watchers, Watties, Plasmon, Farleys, Smart Ones, and The Budget Gourmet ("Heinz and Beech-Nut," 2000). Other products include companies such as Go Ahead!, Bagel Bites, John West, Petit Navire, Boston Market, Skippy, Kibbles n Bits, Pounce, Wagwells, Natures Recipe, Orlando, ABC, Olivine and Pudliszki (2000). With such a large product line and expansive company affiliation, Heinz did not evolve by accident. Its competitive strategy within the foods industry is brilliant.
