that speaks of the struggles of a native boy in the northern part of the nation. It is a story about this boy, Chris, and his struggles and joys. Throughout
the novel there is the driving issue or theme of names. There is the problem with the meaning of names, and the deep symbolic use of names for characters and
even for the team on which Chris finds himself. One of the names in the book, the name of an individual, is Belly Button. Belly Button is Chris best
friend and as Chris states, "He is the most sensible one of us Penacook kids" which indicates that he has the depth and understanding, but humorously enough, he has a
name like Belly Button (Bruchac 23). Another character is Pizza, a somewhat simple and humorous character whose name seems to illustrate the
simple society of these young people. Pizza is very much a food that all people seem to like, no matter their culture, and in the character of Pizza there is
something likable and simple that seems to symbolize how many cultures can come together and appreciate the same things. Muskrat Mike is another name that is odd, and another
character who is important as he is a DJ and creates sort of a connection for the kids to the outside world in many ways. He is a Native who
knows a few native words, and a man who is "cool and knows a lot about music" (Bruchac 1). He is a character who continues throughout the novel, as he
exists on the radio. Other names are those such as Gartersnake and in comparison to the name "Chris" it seems as though the narrator has the simplest and most uncomplicated
