freedom and identity. The twist is that she realizes her own freedom and identity through the death, or supposed death, of her husband. One author notes, "The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin represents a negative view of marriage by presenting the reader with a woman who is clearly overjoyed that her husband has died" (Smith). In this "hour" the woman, Mrs. Mallard, sits and reflects on herself, her life, and her future. In the end, however, in the final sentence of the story, when she finds that her husband is not dead, she "died of heart disease--of the joy that kills" (Chopin). The following paper examines and analyzes this final sentence, arguing that it was not a literal heart disease but rather a symbolic constriction of her heart with the knowledge that her freedom was no longer a reality. The Heart in The Story of an Hour In the beginning of the story the reader is made aware that the woman has a heart condition, or so it is stated: "Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husbands death" (Chopin). This is really the only mention, until the end, of her heart and a possible "condition" and so the reader may well dismiss this fact in a first reading. But, at the same time, considering that this is very much a feminist story, one must realize that in the past, at the time of the writing of this story in 1894, women were often misdiagnosed with one condition or another.
