The phenomena of growth is not isolated to the US, but also seen in other countries, such as the UK to Japan, reflecting the general cultural shift and increased interest in health and fitness. If we first consider the trends within the industry the reasons behind these trend may then be discussed. This is a growth sector, in January 2001 there were 16,983 register health clubs in the United States, with membership of 32.8 million and industry revenues of $11.6 billion. The membership is continually growing, as it grows and the demand increases the supply also increases to meet the demand. If we look at figure one we can see the history of the membership figures for health clubs in the United States (IHRSA, 2003). There have been some decreases, if the membership graph is then compared former years, for example, membership was 30.5 million in 1999 29.48 million in 1998, 28.3 million in 1997, 26.25 in 1996, 24.1 in 1995, but this was a drop on 1994 when there were 25.1 million members (IHRSA, 2003). In 1993 there were 22.97 members, with 1992 having 20.97 members and 1991 20.99 million as 1990 20.62 million (IHRSA, 2003). The development of health clubs to satisfy the demand and result in this membership has also been along similar lines, the 2001 number of 16,983 was an increase on 2000 when the number 15,372, in 1999 it was 15,125 (IHRSA, 2003).In 1998 there were it was 13,799, up from the 1997 figure of 13,097, 1996 was slightly higher at 13,354, 1995 was 12,608, and 1994 was 12,408, 1993 was 11,655, 1992 was 12, 635, 1991 was 12,146 (IHRSA, 2003).
