a risk factor. We know that smoking is associated with all sorts of health problems. It is logical to assume, then, that choosing not to smoke would be
in ones own best interest. Given the fact that choosing not to smoke does not always fully protect us from the risk factors associated with smoking, the thesis can
be presented that: much more needs to be done on a societal level to insure that non-smokers are protected fully from the risk factor of secondhand smoke.
Imposing anti-smoking laws is one step in the right direction towards addressing the hazard presented by tobacco use. Although imposing no smoking laws is highly controversial, the
urgency of doing so becomes apparent when we consider the health impacts of smoke. When we consider the choice to either smoke or not smoke and the potential impacts
of secondary smoke, it is important for first distinguish between what is a hazard and what is a risk factor. Aegis defines a hazard as "the potential to
cause harm". A risk factor, in turn, is defined as "the likelihood of harm" (Aegis, 2006). Tobacco, therefore, is the hazard and choosing to smoke is the risk
factor. Being exposed to secondhand smoke is a risk factor as well. Just because tobacco exists does not mean that we have to use it. Subjecting
oneself to the health hazard of tobacco is, in most cases at least, a choice. We either choose to smoke or we choose not to smoke. As has
been noted, however, there is another unfortunate hazard that has the potential to impact even those that choose not to smoke. That hazard is secondary smoke and recent evidence
