However, as would be expected, she was a woman who faced many hardships in her career, primarily because she was a woman in a time when women were expected to be nothing more than wives and mothers. The following paper examines some of the life of Emily Dickinson, discussing the various types of hardships she had to endure in her life and career. Emily Dickinson It should, perhaps, be noted first and foremost that Emily Dickinson never published while she lived. And, it appears as though she did not have a strong desire to publish either: "Emily Dickinson is indeed probably the greatest American poet and a most original voice, and the fact that she never published or intended to publish her poems is a strong statement of art for arts sake, of creativity for personal transcendence versus fame and the need for external forces to validate her identity and values" (Hermitary: Resources and Reflections on Hermits and Solitude). There was a time when she sent a few to Thomas Higginson who was an important writer at the time. He believed that while her poems were very interesting, people probably would not like them because they were different. As such Emily decided at that point that she would only write for family and friends, and of course herself, for she believed that no one but these people would care to read them. Yet, this certainly did not hinder her creative writing, and in fact it may have helped it along for she had the freedom to merely write because she wanted to, not because she was told to.
