reasons. The Handmaids Tale is the nightmare that would follow if ultra-conservative sexuality were coupled with fundamentalist Christianity, and both taken to the furthest extreme. The result is
a world in which women are walking wombs, nothing more, valuable only in their ability to breed. This paper discusses the phrase "Bodily functions at least remain democratic" and
answers other specific questions about the book. Discussion The sentence "Bodily functions remain democratic" is a comment Moira makes to Offred ("of Fred"), the narrator of the book,
in a bathroom of the "Club" to which the Commander has taken Offred. The remark is extremely ironic, because women like Offred are nothing more than breeders and have
no control over their own bodies. Moira follows up her comment by adding "everybody shits" (Atwood, 1986, p. 252). When we hear of the conversation, however, its in
a flashback, as Offred sits on the side of a tub, preparing to have sex with the Commander. Although they have sex (actually, as Offred says, they fuck) once
a month for the sole purpose of procreation, they are now in a place where its very risky to be seen. But they are there at the Commanders insistence.
The relationship between the Commander and Offred is the central relationship in the book, and it remains mysterious because his motives are so murky. Its not clear whether
hes fallen in love with Offred or not; its not clear if hes considering rebelling against the regime; his feelings for his wife seem to be those of boredom, but
