two incredible paintings which both focus on the sea. They are also two paintings which, in many ways, present us with a look at mans relationship with the sea. In
the following paper we examine each painting separately and then compare and contrast the two. The paper offers the thesis that these two paintings offer us very different looks at
how man relates to nature. The Gulf Stream In this particular painting there can be little doubt that a great deal of tension exists. The painting illustrates a
very dangerous situation and a situation where there seems to be no hope for the individual. But, from a more symbolic perspective, there are numerous visions one could gain from
examining this painting, as is illustrated by the following author who states that, "a visually arresting and highly allegorical piece which, unusually for Homer, is a work of imagination rather
than a scene drawn from reality" (Anonymous Notes on Winslow Homer homer_writeup.htm). Reiss states that "People have been pained at not being able to make sense of their desire
for energetic activity on one hand, and for rest or repose on the other. Aesthetic Realism teaches that we can learn from art how to put these opposites together in
our lives" homer-dr.htm). He further illustrates that "Homers painting - in its composition and technique shows that we can feel truly reposeful and energetic at once. It has in it
a man on a boat whose mast has been broken and swept away by a hurricane, adrift in the restless sea, and surrounded by sharks" (Reiss homer-dr.htm). From one perspective
