(Atibuni, 2007). The worm has rendered a heavy toll on human beings for centuries. It has only come to recent world attention, however, with the involvement of past
U.S. President Jimmy Carter who pledged to eradicate the worm after witnessing a worm emerge from a Ghana woman in 1988 (New African, 2007). Carter projected the worm could
be eradicated within ten years (Faul, 2007). Unfortunately, while considerable progress is being made, the guinea worm remains alive and well despite the ten year eradication goal.
The key to eradicating the guinea worm lies in education and in the provision of clean water to some of the most remote locations in
the world. The guinea work infects humans when they drink water that is infested with tiny fleas that are infected with guinea worm eggs (Atibuni, 2007). The eggs
hatch within their human host and then mate (Faul, 2007). Typically the adult worms take up residence in the bodys extremities, particularly in the legs and feet of the
host (Atibuni, 2007). When it is approximately one year old and up to three feet long the larva emerges as an adult worm when the host submerges
the part of the body containing the worm into water (Atibuni, 2007). Once it exits the body and enters a water body, the worm lays up to one million
eggs and thus continues its life cycle (Faul, 2007). Educating those that live in regions inhabited by the worm of the
importance of maintaining sanitary water use practices is one of the most basic steps that are being taken to relegate this parasite to the pages of history. Establishing clean
