nation state as well as the idea of individuality. The growth of the market economy is another thematic element. In choosing one idea-the growth of the nation-state-- what is found
in the chapters of Wolffs How Many Miles to Babylon? Before going on to explore the work, it should be pointed out that this piece of writing focuses on the
writings of travelers who lived during the time period in question. The exploration of a few centuries provides credible information for the researcher or anyone interested in the history pertinent
to the Middle Ages. In respect to the idea that there was growth of the nation states, that is one of the more salient points made by the book. The
author points out that map making was underdeveloped in the nation (Wolff 47). Yet, Wolff discusses the growth of the nation states and how people would begin to travel. It
is for example explained that during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries there had been growth in terms of commerce (Wolff 10). There had probably been some growth in the population
as well. The city-states were clearly growing and there is much evidence in Wolffs book. It is important to understand that history unraveled in a progressive fashion. There were not
enough maps because in the past people did not travel. Travel would open the door to population changes and trade. The author focuses on travel and what people would be
advised to take with them for example in the Second Chapter of the book. Yet, it is important to highlight the fact that travel is important in the scheme of
