there is a desire to expand and embrace other counties that are in the region. Such as the Eastern European countries. There are many perceived advantages, in addition to potential
inflows of capital in the form of subsidies and grants, there are the better trade links and the historical evidence of bettering economic conditions for the countries that do join,
such as Greece. The way that the EU may expand will also need changes within the union to be made. Turkey and
Cyprus may appear to have little in common with France German and the United Kingdom, but it is the Union where these are the most influential members that they wish
to join. The European Union also see the future as one of an expanding Union, but this will not be without its problems. The first problem seen may be in the
governance of the countries wishing to join being required. "the candidate country has achieved stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and
protection of minorities" (A?kinis, 2002). This may appear to be the modern form of
governance for any country, but as we can see if we look to organisations such as Amnesty International, Turkey, one of the applicants has a bad record on their human
rights violations. This means that in order to join not only do countries need to comply with this requirement, they need to demonstrates this and evidence it as needed.
Lithuania has started the change in its governance styles, and Cyprus is actually looking more like being in a position to find peace
