Many are familiar with the old fashioned Coca Cola ads, and the soda fountain was often equated with drug stores. Today, this concept is aligned with the creation of the
product known as Coca Cola, or its abbreviated name Coke. Coca Cola is an American mainstay, but the product began to go global early in its history. By the
turn of the twentieth century it was sold in both the United States of America and Canada. The international sales to Canada and Mexico were actually recorded as early as
1897 ("Coca Cola," 2006). Panama would begin to bottle the drink in 1906 and in 1927, Coke was sold in China ("Coca Cola," 2006). By that time, China was one
of one hundred countries that sold the beverage. Since the 1970s, Coke is bigger world wide than it is in the United States alone ("Coca Cola," 2006). That fact represents
the idea that Coke has grown internationally so quickly that it sells more bottles of the soda on a global level than it does in its own country. At
present, Coca Cola is a company that has locations in two hundred countries ("Coca Cola," 2006). It is clearly a global enterprise. At the same time, there is controversy.
During the 1980s, when it was bottled in Mogadishu, Somalia was one nation, but since that time, the Coca Cola plant there had been demolished (Lacey, 2006). Today, squatters
sit inside what was once a Coca Cola plant (Lacey, 2006). That said, and despite some negative events and problems, Coke is big business in the United States and abroad.
