of the most concerning conditions facing our country. Our children, in particular, are at risk. It is estimate, in fact, that one out of five children in our
contemporary society is obese. Most of the problem can be attributed to our changing lifestyles, lifestyles in which parents are busier and busier and have less and less time
to spend in proper child care. Parents have become content to leave children to choose their own activities, activities which more often than not are sedentary as opposed to
physically challenging. This coupled with the ever-growing influence of the corporate world on childrens food choices has resulted in a steady growth in the number of children in our
society who are obese. The steady stream of advertisements for fast food restaurants and unhealthy food choices, advertisements geared specifically towards children, serve to recruit our children at
a very young age in a lifestyle that everyone knows is unhealthy for them. The solution to this problem is in reality quite simple. While that solution could
benefit from a greater degree of ethics in advertising, the most important component in our childrens lives is their parents. Parents need to be more in tune to their
childrens activities and their food choices. Obesity observes no geographic or socioeconomic boundaries. Indeed, it can be found throughout the population in
individuals ranging from infants to those that are quite elderly. In all, obesity is estimated as affecting thirty-four percent of Americans (Ridings, Rapp, Boosalis, and Pomeroy, 1998). Indeed,
