been a competition that puts one individual, or group, against another, for the sake of sport and honor. The following paper examines the Greeks and the Olympics and then examines
what one can learn from them, and how they have influenced the world. The Greeks and the Olympics "The Olympics games,
which began in 776 BCE, were held in Olympia to honor the Greek God Zeus. Every four years, free, Greek-speaking males would compete in musical and athletic events, to prove
the physical and mental prowess that their city-state possessed" (Greece, 2003). They were expected to train well for the events and while originally the games only involved running, but then
slowly other games were added such as the long run, the long jump, wrestling and other events (The History Channel, 2007). Women
were not allowed to compete, nor were they allowed to watch the Olympics for it was a mans thing (The History Channel, 2007). The ancient Greeks did not really hold
to any belief that women should be included in anything that men held to be important. But, at the same time they held their own games called the Heraea (The
History Channel, 2007). In terms of who actually participated it seems that the main players were the Athenians and Corinthians (Greece, 2003).
Athenians were considered to be very vain, yet also very courteous (Greece, 2003). They achieved a great deal in the subjects of art and science and were also considered to
possess some of the greatest heroes in war (Greece, 2003). The Corinthians were heralded for other things. They "were achievers in culture and finance, with their city-state being the trade
