magnificent piece that stands large and powerful in the desert of Egypt. The following paper examines the art of the sphinx as well as the history of the sphinx.
The Great Sphinx of Giza As mentioned, the Great Sphinx of Giza is a very large piece of art. It is, "It is one of the largest single-stone statues
on Earth, and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians in the 3rd millennium BC. It is the earliest known monumental sculpture" (Wikipedia, 2007). As is the
case with a great deal of art and architecture that has been discovered in Egypt, the artist, the model (if there was one), and the people who constructed or built
the statue are essentially unknown and will likely always remain a mystery (Wikipedia, 2007). But, there are many who argue that the sphinx was erected by Khafre and that this
is evidenced through similar styles seen in other constructions of the time such particular temples during his particular reign (Wikipedia, 2007). The great Sphinx of Giza has lone held
the interest of laymen and professionals alike, for it stands as a mystery and a wondrous piece of art. It is noted that it is unknown what Egyptians called this
statue when it was erected, or even through the ages prior to its real discovery (Wikipedia, 2007). It was given the name of "Sphinx" "was given to it in Antiquity
based on the legendary Greek creature with the body of a lion, the head of a woman and the wings of an eagle, though Egyptian sphinxes have the head of
a man" (Wikipedia, 2007). The word itself is derived from the Greek word for Sphinx which is apparently derived from the verb "to strangle" (Wikipedia, 2007).
