this particular period in American history, it seems, must have elements that speak of alcohol because alcohol was a serious concern of the society at the time. Following WWI the
nation seemed to become intoxicated more so than ever and this led to prohibition which did not work. The Roaring Twenties proved this as people were determined to drink, as
well as buy and sell the product. The following paper illustrates how "The Great Gatsby" is a story whose entire foundation rests largely on alcohol and alcohol consumption.
The Great Gatsby and Alcohol One of the first things that we see occur as it relates to alcohol is a Jay Gatsby party. We note that many people do
nothing but party and drink at this party. However, the character of Jay Gatsby does not drink: "I wondered if the fact that he was not drinking helped to set
him off from his guests, for it seemed to me that he grew more correct as the fraternal hilarity increased" (Fitzgerald Chapter III). This is the first time that the
narrator, Nick, actually comes face to face with the man who is his neighbor for the weekend and in this we see that there is something about him that is
different than those who attend his party and do little more than drink and let loose. With such a setting, as one of the most important that depicts the
society at the time, we see people drinking and acting foolishly, with an understanding that most of these people were not even invited to the party. Gatsby just throws parties
