American Dream has become one of wealth without substance, or honor. In the 1974 film version starring Robert Redford we are presented with a very powerful movie that illustrates the theme of wealthy lifestyles. The following paper briefly discusses this particular theme in the 1974 film. Wealth and The Great Gatsby "In the 1974 movie The Great Gatsby, based on F. Scott Fitzgeralds 1925 novel about the rich and idle confronted by an up-from-rags upstart, Jay Gatsby (Robert Redford) attempts to impress his lost love, Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow), with his Long Island mansion" (Philipps, 2000). We know that he has spent much of his life trying to obtain wealth so that he can have Daisy because "Daisy, now married, was the well-to-do belle who in their youth explained that, rich girls dont marry poor boys, Jay Gatsby" (Philipps, 2000). With this as the primary premise of the entire movie we know that everything these people have, or everything that they feel is worthy, is associated with wealth and possessions. Gatsby has spent his entire life, it seems, preparing for the moment he can share his wealth with Daisy: "To demonstrate his wealth, Gatsby gives Daisy a tour of his palatial home, shows her his collection of hand-tailored shirts and strolls her through his kitchen. There, we see Daisys hand trailing along a large work table...the elegant chandeliers and period furniture, a surfeit of molds was a mark of remarkable wealth" (Phillips, 2000). She takes in all that she sees and is truly impressed. But, she is not necessarily looking at Gatsby as much as she is looking at the wealth he possesses.
