classic for many different reasons. In many respects it is a novel that portrays and illustrates the great times of social and economic change in the 1920s, and also a
story that speaks strongly of old ideals and the American Dream. In his essay/review "Fitzgeralds Radiant World" Thomas Flanagan makes many valid points about other elements of the novel. Flanagan
discusses how illusions and a belief in illusions is a very strong part of the story. The following paper examines some of Flanagans statements and examines the novel as it
involves such statements as they relate to the characters of Gatsby and Daisy. The Great Gatsby: Gatsby and Daisy Flanagan notes
that, "Daisy lives in the world we like to call real, in which women, real women, stuff their suitcases with real silks and drive real cars over to a lover.
A bit headstrong, perhaps, but none the less real for that." When one reads the novel one can see that Daisy is perhaps very real, if relatively shallow as well.
She is not a woman who drinks, but she is a woman who loves expensive things and likes to live a life that has little substance. At one point, for
example, Gatsby is showing her through his house and he shows her his silk shirts: "Theyre such beautiful shirts, she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. It makes
me sad because Ive never seen such--such beautiful shirts before" Such a reaction to silk shirts indicates, or could well indicate, many different things, many of which are superficial or
