true that the social context is one of the major elements of the narrative, in that the characters are a product of their society whilst at the same time offering
a critique of its flaws. As Fitter (2002) points out, there are moments in the narrative where the faults and deficits of society are exposed, as the perspective on the
characters shifts almost from the sublime to the ridiculous. The parties, he
notes, begin with an almost magical and sophisticated atmosphere of delicate romance, champagne and moonlight, but degenerate in the end into violence, drunken stupor, screaming wives and cars in the
ditch (Fitter, 2002, PG) which exemplifies the difference between the fa?ade, or society as it ought to be, and the reality, or society as it is.
He makes the point, also, that the characters seem to adopt a mystical, almost religious perspective on
their lives, which is constantly undermined by their materialistic desires. Their social conditioning leads them to kindle a strife for merely personal and financial achievement(Fitter, 2002, PG): in other words,
they have somehow missed the spiritual dimension which they purport to seek, and have been sidetracked instead into seeing material rewards as the ultimate goal of their lives.
To have been everywhere and done everything is seen as the epitome of sophistication,
the irony being, of course, that to have seen and done all does not mean that one knows all, merely that one is the repository of sensory experience. The characters
