the fire and to explain what those effects were. First, an overview of the Great Chicago Fire is in order. It was on October 8, 1871 that the fire broke out ("History Files," 2007). It started behind the dwelling of Catherine OLeary ("History Files," 2007). This fire quickly got out of control and that is obvious. Some might speculate that this was a poor neighborhood that did not have firefighter resources or something of that order. However, what happened was human error. The firefighters had been exhausted from fighting another fire and simply ended up in the wrong neighborhood, at least at first ("History Files," 2007). By the time they got to the right place, the fire had burned out of control ("History Files," 2007). The neighborhood might provide some characteristics to lead one to discern what type of people lived in the region. It was a neighborhood comprised of "wooden houses, commercial and industrial buildings, and private mansions" ("History Files," 2007). It seems to be a mix of types of dwellings. A picture shows refugees running through Potters Field and toward Lincoln Park. Potters Field is where the poor are buried and so, at least that part of town might not have been very well off. At the same time, it seems that there was a lot of money in the area. After all, there had been private mansions, which were burned to the ground. Interestingly, after the fire was over, people tried to get money out of the safes they found ("History Files," 2007). Everyone was affected as most of the people had lost what they owned.
