its intricate hierarchy. Species are classified through an inordinate process and it goes from higher to lower and broad to narrow. That is how classification works. From there, one might
believe that the world is orderly, just as the Darwinian process relays. If one accepts that idea, then one will view the world a bit differently than someone who sees
the world as chaotic. Such individuals think that every event is a chance occurrence and that people are not the makers of their own destinies. Yet, can one truly see
the world as not having any semblance of a controlling structure? Are random events possible? According to some, the answer is no. Something called "chaos theory" emerged in the 1970s
and 1980s from something applied strictly to mathematics to an expansion into many other fields (McLeish , 1993). While chaos theories are still being developed and refined to be utilized
in different ways, it is basically the premise that small changes in a system do not necessarily cause small changes in conditions. In fact, a small change can sometimes make
an enormous difference. A famous example of this is the fluttering of a butterflys wings causing a hurricane on the other side of the world (1993). Yet, one can see
this in action in smaller ways. Another way to look at the world is through the model called The Great Chain of Being. The Great Chain of Being
is "a powerful visual metaphor for a divinely inspired universal hierarchy ranking all forms of higher and lower life" (Valades, 1579). In terms of this philosophy, Ren? Descartes, Blaise Pascal
and Baruch Spinoza each had different ideas or contributory concepts that one can embrace to discuss such theoretical concepts. To Descartes, this concept is found in his ideas about God
