lack of technology that could allow for greater fighting capabilities. In addition, various codes involving buildings, while improved over the 18th century, were still lacking. The following paper examines these
issues, and others, as it relates to the Great Boston Fire of 1872. The Great Boston Fire of 1872 "[I]n 1872,
a monstrous fire nearly destroyed Bostons business district, ravaging the city from the Common to the waterfront. Beginning in a dry goods store, the blaze burned for 15 hours with
a heat so intense that it created its own roaring wind" (Mass Moments). The flames of the fire just seemed to jump, "relentlessly", from one roof to another; roofs that
were made of wood (Mass Moments). As a result it was as though entire stores and warehouses simply melted (Mass Moments). There
were numerous firefighters who were attacking the fire but there was simply not enough water pressure or equipment and so it was decided that buildings needed to be destroyed, blown
up, in order to stop the fire from spreading further, more importantly to keep the fire from getting into the residential areas (Mass Moments). "The blaze reduced 65 acres of
commercial property - almost 1,000 businesses - to ruins. Within two years, a new city would arise from the ashes" (Mass Moments). There were many elements and conditions that came
