Discussion About this Gospel: One scholar notes that this Gospel is particularly attentive to matters of politics and social justice; the text "addresses slaveowners ... and the wealthy ... but its perspective is shaped by the suffering of enslaved and impoverished people" (Schottroff 195). Perhaps this is clearest in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. The scripture passage: Luke tells us that there was once a rich man, "who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich mans table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores" (The Holy Bible, Revised Standard Version Luke: 16:19-21). The two men died; Lazarus was taken to Heaven but the rich man was condemned to Hades; from there he could see Lazarus in bliss (The Holy Bible, Revised Standard Version). The rich man called upon Abraham to send Lazarus to dip his finger in cool water and bring it to him, "for I am in anguish in this flame" (The Holy Bible, Revised Standard Version Luke 16: 24). Abraham refused and reminded the rich man that he had received many good things during his lifetime while Lazarus received many evil things, but now things were reversed (The Holy Bible, Revised Standard Version). Finally, the rich man begged Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his (the rich mans) brothers to mend their ways so they would not also be condemned (The Holy Bible, Revised Standard Version).
