the 5,000 and the resurrection. Feeding the multitudes sets the stage for Jesus testimony that He is the Bread of Life. It is possible to establish an approximate time
period for the account of the feeding of the multitude. It is necessary to compare the accounts of this miracle in Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:10-17 and John 6:1-13
(Johnson, 1891). From this, we learn that this miracle occurred after the death of John the Baptist, which means it could have happened as late as the third year of
Jesus ministry (Johnson, 1891). In thinking about the miracle of the Feeding of 5,000, the reader needs to remember that the writer says there were about 5,000 men: "and the
men sat down, about five thousand of them" (John 6:10). There were women and children in that crowd and adding their numbers to the 5,000, Jesus probably fed between 15,000
and 20,000 (DeLashmutt, 2002). The message is that with Jesus, one will never be hungry. We also find from this story that Jesus did not want anything wasted: "Gather
the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted. So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of five barley loaves left over by those who
had eaten" (John 6:12-13). It was this miracle that led to this crowd wanting to make Jesus king and so, He left the crowd and went to the mountain by
