life of a 25-year-old woman from the northeastern are of Thailand (Udon) who becomes a prostitute in Bangkok. As ORourke follows her through her seedy world and, in fact, shares
an apartment with her in which drunken and comparatively wealthy foreigners take advantage of the boys and girls, as well as women and men (but especially women) who are the
"sex workers" of Bangkok. The typical reaction from a viewer is, not surprisingly, one of horror that people have to do such things to survive and then disgust that there
are countless people in the world (primarily Westernized world) who are more than willing to keep the sex-workers in business. Ironically, the viewer cant help but wonder if
ORourke himself isnt also exploiting a "good woman of Bangkok." The fact that he actually becomes a part of the movie through printed titles (the camera never shows him). The
student gains an overall all sense of the man behind the movie as they read those titles which explain: "The filmmaker was 43 ... And his marriage had ended. He
was trying to understand how love could be so banal and also profound" (Internet source). Of course, The Good Woman of Bangkok has nothing to do with love. But the
idea of ORourkes full intent of his own trip to Thailand and that it had the potential to be his personal "sex holiday" as well, always seems to be hovering
in the back of the awareness of the person watching the movie. Regardless of whether or not his intent was to tell the story of one woman or demonstrate to
the world the sort of life that is lived by people who are dependent on foreigners from the West with money, the story of the woman called "Aoi" (which means
