the novel. The Good Earth The story begins when Wang Lung goes to get a bride, a poor servant woman who
is not pretty and is traditionally simple without having bound feet. He is a man who wants more from life than he has and he essentially relies, without gratitude, on
the hard work and the reproductive capabilities of his wife O-lan. O-lan produces several sons and daughters and is a hard worker and stands beside him throughout her life although
she is abused and neglected. Wang Lung is a man who wants more and as the book progresses he becomes more and
more successful and purchases a great deal of land but also squanders the money as well, especially on a mistress and then second wife, Lotus who is just the opposite
of O-lan. By the end of the book O-lan has died and while only on her deathbed does Wang Lung realize what
he has, he finds he has lost much. His sons are not what he desired and while he possesses great wealth in the form of land and houses, he returns
to his old hut when he is dying, realizing that this was the only thing or place that made him happy. In the end even his death brings him worry,
however, for he hears his sons planning the selling of the land when their father dies. The primary theme or plot of
