The Golden Gate Bridge is the third longest suspension bridge in the world (Plummer 110). Many has praised its attractiveness more than its length and legends. And when Popular
Mechanics magazine sought the seven wonders of the modern world,the Golden Gate Bridge was chosen due to its striking beauty and "triumph of civil engineering" (Pope 50). It was the
longest suspension bridge in the world when it was completed in 1937. However, when the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in New York was built in 1964, it lost its status; still,
it remains the tallest suspension bridge in the world, hanging from its two 746 foot high towers (50). Further, its a strong bridge. It survived the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake
and further has only been shut down three times in 60 years (50). It remains a tourist attraction. II. History of the Bridge From a Cultural Perspective The
1990 census reveals that San Francisco had a population of 723,959 (Pearlstien) with approximately 387,800 (Pearlstien) whites, 79,000 blacks, 3,500 native Americans, 210,900 Asians or Pacific Islanders, and about
42,800 as classified as other races (Pearlstien). Approximately 100,700 people (Pearlstien), of several races, were from Hispanic origins, most of those having roots in Mexico . Of course this is
not surprising considering California borders that country. Non-Hispanic whites made up just about 47 percent (Pearlstien) of the population, the Asian or Pacific Island group comprised almost 30 percent (Pearlstien),
