A.R Gibb both put forward this view in different ways, and are aligned with the much earlier work of Muqaddimah by Ibn Khaldun. Lapidus (1992) puts forward the
view the Islam that is seen in modern politics is not new, it is simply a reconstitution pf historical paradigms; models and patterns of the past recreated. Lapidus argues that
in the pre modern times there were two main models of Islam; the first of these was a highly integrated model where there was a religious teacher at the head
where there could be the integration and amalgamation of political and moral leadership, under the guidance of a charismatic religious leader (Lapidus, 1992).
The second model is where there is a greater degree of separation, the political and the religious institution were separate, and the political elites and the religious elites
were separate, where the political elites would be responsible for running the society, but the religious elites would be seen as the custodians of the true Islam. This, it is
argued, reflect in the way that the states have evolved today and the different models that are present (Lapidus, 1992). This is seen in the historical development of states;
the animists and the polytheists that were in the fertile crescent are developing into the first of the models discussed above, the second model is the monotheists of the Middle
