young adolescents, into the world of passion and sexuality. They are very different stories and also stories that offer the exploration and understanding of sexuality in very different ways. In reading both stories one can see two very different ways in which youth discover and experience sexuality. The following paper compares and contrasts the two, arguing that they ultimately demonstrate the different ways children can learn and understand sexuality. The Go-Between and Lolita The first, and most obvious, difference between the two novels concerns the gender of the adolescent. In Hartleys story the individual is a young boy and in Nabokovs story the adolescent is a girl. With such a strong difference it comes as no surprise that they both learn about sexuality very differently. Girls are, more often than not, victims of mens desire and boys are more often than not individuals who all but seek out sexuality in order to understand what all the other boys/men are talking about. The gender roles are very different and in the case of Lolita and Leo this is very evident as Lolita is a bit precocious and all but seeking out the attentions of a man. In the case of Leo he is simply a liaison between lovers and learns of sexuality through them. Lolita appears to like the control she can have over a man and Leo is simply an observer, although this observing seems to damage him somehow as innocence is clearly lost. At one point the reader can see how the boy speaks of what he is learning in the following: "I did not know it by the name of passion. I did not understand the nature of the bond that drew ...
