it relates to a strategic focus in the creation of quality, is defined by behavioral connections. In essence, it is only through behavior that quality will materialize. Quality will not
occur spontaneously. Yet, the values are what drive quality. Why would any manufacturer make a quality product if it were not for ethics or values? It pays to make something
the cheapest way and allow human resources to get by on a scant amount of salary and benefits as the bottom line is served well. Hence, the only way for
quality to have any meaning is for it to be aligned with values. Quinn (1992) for example talks about the Intelligent Enterprise and explains that the new enterprise of which
he writes may be described as "a highly disaggregated, knowledge and serviced based enterprise concentrated around a core of set knowledge or service skills" (p.373). Here, the idea of the
customer looms large. In enterprise today, there is the idea of the customer within an organization. In other words, instead of customers always being someone outside of an organization, the
new way of thinking sees every other human being from other departments for example, as a customer of the employee. In essence, there is now the idea that people should
treat others with respect. There is no excuse for treating others poorly, whether they are true customers of a retail establishment or internal customers. In any event, the idea that
values are integrated into a corporation is found in every one of these ideas that go to customer service orientation, and the idea that a firm is dealing with human
