warming is a common topic in contemporary times. The validity of the phenomenon, however, is highly controversial. Stuart James summarizes some of the controversy surrounding global warming.
Written in 2006 Jamess summary, although valuable, is actually somewhat dated. It was written before the recent admission, for example, that much of the data supporting global warming was
altered by some of the top scientists in the field. Even with that admission, however, global warming is still a subject of considerable concern. If global warming is
actually occurring it has the potential to change the world as we know it. As Stuart points out, while some of those changes could be incredibly bad, others could
be quite positive. Stuart contends that global mean sea level rose one foot during the twentieth century. This increase occurred in relation
to a one-degree Fahrenheit increase in global temperature (Stuart). Numerous researchers support contentions such as these. In "Field Notes from a Catastrophe" author Elizabeth Kolbert, provides data from
the Antarctic ice core that suggests that the earth is warmer now than it has been in some 420,000 years (7). Kolbert (7) then contends that even a four
to five degree rise in temperature could put the earth on a downward spiral towards an unprecedented "climate regime, one with which modern humans have no prior experience". Stuart
