not only placed social pressure on businesses, but also commercial pressure. Different paradigms for competing have also arisen, with that of shareholder wealth maximisation (SWM) (Dobson, 1999) and that of
corporate wealth maximisation (CWM) (Pedersen and Thomsen, 1997). These are not patricianly new schools of though and many of the arguments are not new but their importance has been of
increased public concerns. One model looks to promote the shareholders interest as the primary interest, in line with the ideas of Milton Friedman, the second looks at a more holistic
approach, whilst not denying the responsibility of the corporation to the shareholder it also accepts a number of equally important stakeholder interests (Pedersen and Thomsen, 1997).
The growing concerns for the stakeholder approach has been seen with many different measures. One of the more visible measures has been that of the
UN Global Compact framework. This indicates not only the result of public pressure and changing awareness of the interrelated issues of humanity, the environment and social concerns with business, but
also the political direction that has been adopted and is evolving at this time. By looking at this framework and applying to a single company; Qantas, the goals and implication
of adapting this framework may be better appreciated. 2. The Global Compact The Global Compact was launched on the 31st of January 1999 by Kofi Annan the Secretary General
