the Internet. This immense, technological leap has created a smaller world. Countries are tied to one another in different ways now than ever before. Of course, the Internet is not
the sole piece of thread that ties nations together. Globalization has been around since before Christopher Columbus learned that the earth was not flat. Yet, as the twenty-first century unfolds,
things are still rapidly changing. Global cities are materializing. Before discussing global cities, it helps to define the concept. According to Saskia Sassen, global cities are defined as functioning
in four distinct ways: "first, as highly concentrated command points in the organization of the world economy; second, as key locations for finance and for specialized service firms, which have
replaced manufacturing as the leading economic sectors; third, as sites of production, including the production of innovations, in these leading industries and fourth, as markets of the products and innovations
producedi." One can begin to see that the global city is something new and is something that is beginning to make its presence. Global cities act as pivotal points where
people meet. And not only are global cities found, but global regions exist as well. Sassen also makes a distinction between the global city and the global city region, seeing
the latter as more diverse and impressiveii. There is for example the North American continent that includes the United States, Canada and Mexico. It also seems that today, Asia is
