is presented with the stories of families. These families have some serious problems that are offered up and examined in their respective plays. In the plays there are also major
women, the matriarchs, of the family. The Glass Menagerie has Amanda and A Raisin in the Sun has Mama. The following paper examines the two, offering a comparison and contrast
of the two women. The paper explains how they are both the matriarchs of their family as a comparison, and then how they are different in their mental stability and
their parenting abilities. The Glass Menagerie and A Raisin in the Sun As mentioned, both of these women are the matriarchs of their family. In Williams play Amanda
is the mother of a son and a daughter who all live together. She attempts to help them develop and she also has the highest hopes for her children. Mama,
in Hansberrys play, is clearly a mother as well. She also has a son and a daughter that she lives with and she too hopes for the best for her
children and equally involves herself in their development. Both women also seem to believe that in some ways their children will also develop without them. What this means is that
these women are not too controlling in relationship to every move their children make. This does not mean that one or the other will not demonstrate a sense of control,
functional or dysfunctional, but that they also seem to accept that their children will do their own thing, so to speak. In looking more closely at their individual personalities
one can well see that Amanda is a woman who is seemingly lost in her past and in her dreams. There appear to be things that she would rather not
