moves swiftly, though held back by a past that will not let go. Just as the theme of Magnolia was that the past will not let one go, the themes
of these two extraordinary works sport similar ideas. Yet, in these two novels, the ghosts are representatives of the past. In analyzing these two works, one may want
to contemplate just how the living ghosts of "Beloved" and "Season of Migration to the North" represent the relationship of the past to the present, and of "memory" to
"reality"? After all, the ghosts are the inklings to the present, whether or not they are real or imagined. When eighteen years after the babys death, Sethe is haunted by
the spirit she sees it as a manifestation of guilt. In Beloved, perhaps the most important scene is when the baby appears as a young woman. It is as if
she grew up on the other side. In order to understand the significance of the moment, and the psychology behind it, one must have a cursory knowledge of the story.
Set just after the civil war Sethe is a runaway slave who had once killed her infant daughter so that she would not grow up in the vile institution. Although
the guilt is paramount to the story, it is a ghost story above all. Is the baby Sethe Suggs tried to forget really haunting her, or is her mind playing
tricks? Does the baby come back in human form? Is she also reincarnated? The fact that she comes forth as a young woman may help to resolve the puzzle but
