is perhaps as interesting as that of the statue itself, which serves as an important reminded not only of the life of Washington, but of the very foundation upon which
this country was built. The George Washington Statue resides in the Rotunda of the Virginia State Capital building (George Washington
Statue, 2003). It was crafted by renown artist Jean-Antoine Houdon, and was completed in 1788 after about three years of work (George Washington Statue, 2003). The statue is
solid marble, and represents the life-size image of George Washington (George Washington Statue, 2003). Houdon was born in Versailles in 1741,
and became known as the most distinguished French sculptor in the latter part of the 18th century (Jean-Antoine Houdon, 2003). The statue was commissioned by the State of Virginia,
and was to be designed to be "of the finest marble and the best workmanship" (Historical Background of the George Washington Statue, 2003). Thomas Jefferson was the ambassador to
France, and so it was he who recommended Houdon as the artist to complete this challenging piece (Historical Background of the George Washington Statue, 2003).
In 1785, Houdon joined Franklin on a journey to America, and arrived in Philadelphia (Jean-Antoine Houdon, 2003). From there, he spent two weeks in
