makeup. The two can, in fact, be related in may ways. Turkey is located primarily in Southwest Asia but a small portion of the country, approximately three percent
is located in Southeast Europe. The two regions are quite distinctive in terms of their ethnic populations and in terms of the terrain and ecological factors. These two
regions are separated by the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles. Turkey is neighbored by Iraq to the southeast, Syria and the Mediterranean Sea on the South and the
Aegean Sea on the west. To the northwest of the country is Greece and Bulgaria, to the north the Black Sea, and to the east is Armenia, Georgia
and Iran. The large number of adjacent countries and their own distinctive ethnic populations has had a definite influence on the ethnic situation in Turkey. An even more
prevalent influence in todays globalized world, however, is the presence of the West. Turkeys politics and even her culture has been shaped by each of these factors.
Many of the Turkish people are descended from the Ottomans but the ethnic mixture in the country is highly variable. A substantial portion of
the country is of Kurdish descent. There are also a Arabic, Circasian, Greek, Armenian, Georgian, and Laze-speaking ethnic representatives as well. The primary religion in the country is
Muslim but there are also some Orthodox Christians, Gregorians, Roman Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. Zakaria (2002) succinctly explains that while the country is indeed 99 percent Muslim it remains:
"resolutely secular, democratic and pro-Western. And these are not attitudes held only in Istanbul salons.
