Kansass Dorothy would lose her farm. But there is no guarantee that the plants one takes for granted today will be available ten, twenty or thirty years down the road.
After all, no one foresaw the eruption of AIDS and with pests and viruses attacking life on Earth, it is possible that the farming situation can take a turn for
the worse. If someday there were no fresh apples or pears available for consumption, and no corn or green beans, that would be somewhat problematic. Few think about plant breeding
in the future. Yet, it is an important issue. Genetic engineering can provide the answer. However, when delving into the specifics of genetic engineering, there are more questions than answers.
It is a relatively new process as it respects foods. DellaPenna, a biochemist, suggests that genetically engineered foods are important as it relates to advances in agriculture and health
(Ackerman, 2002). Although such scientists see a great deal of potential in genetically engineered products, the other side of the coin is that they are rushed to the market before
being fully tested (2002). Indeed, many people are fearful of food products that are not pure or that have been altered with chemicals or through genetic engineering. Many people remember
DES, the wonder drug of the 1960s, that produced babies without limbs. Of course, while the FDA is cautious today, there is the possibility of something objectionable receiving approval. Just
recently, the drug Vioxx was recalled. People worry that even approved methods of creating crops will down the road be deemed dangerous. II. The Controversy of Genetic Engineered Foods
When reading an article by Jennifer Ackerman (2002), regarding this controversial subject, many questions are posed. For one, who is eating biotech foods? Ackerman answers in the Answer
